Success Stories

Jocelyn Huerta came to the Boys & Girls Club looking for a place of belonging. She struggled with self-confidence (even though she was a pretty good student). Her humble background made it difficult for her to find her niche in life.
Jocelyn’s mother and father are both from Mexico, speak very little English and work domestic jobs. The family’s income is minimal at best and they live in one of the poorest communities in the city.

When Jocelyn first enrolled at the Club, naturally she spent most of her time in our Learning Center. Staff quickly noticed that she had a powerful ability to learn. We embraced her thirst for knowledge and worked diligently with her to help her reach her full academic potential. We are proud to announce that she was an Honor Roll student and never missed a day of school.

Jocelyn’s academic successes gave her the confidence to also broaden her horizons socially. She is no longer this shy kid looking for a place to fit in. She has found it with abundance here at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Santa Rosa.

Stacey Chapman
began attending the Club when she was around 8 years old. Her parents had signed her up for the Co-ed Basketball League so she could learn a new sport. As part of the payment for the Basketball season, she was able to go to the Club after school and play. Stacey’s childhood home was right around the corner from the Club, so it couldn’t have been more perfect! The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Rosa helped to mold her in the person she is today in a variety of ways.

The Club helped her learn many skills over the years. The most important skill she learned is leadership. Whether it was when she was a player on the basketball court, helping a team mate with a play, or now when she is influencing children to make the right decisions. Stacey says, “I wouldn’t have these skills with this Club.” Another valuable she has learned through attending and working here, is conflict management. She had a very ’short temper’ when she was younger and the staff members at the Club had ways of getting the kids to talk out their problems that she still uses with kids today.

Stacey states, “I am a lucky person to have had the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Santa Rosa’s influence in my life”
